Four feet of wire can be bent into a circle bent into asquare or cut into two pieces to make both a circle and a square.How much wire should be used for the circle if the total areaenclosed by the figure is to be a maximum.

We can answer this question without calculus. if we have four feet of wire to make a square, that would be 1 feetevery side. The area of this square is 1 ft2 if we have four feet of wire to make a circle, we wouldhave 4/π = 2r radius = .6366 Now the area would be 1.27 ft2 Since the circle produces more area, the answer is all FOUR FEET OFWIRE should be used for the CIRCLE and none for the square.
